Origin of Collaboration
Industry-university collaboration initiatives dating back to our founding period underpin Murata's technological innovation.In 1955, we spun off our research and development division in response to the electronics revolution. The following year, in 1956, we established Murata Technology Research Laboratory Co.
This laboratory welcomed university researchers. We set up advanced equipment in the laboratory, including spectrometers and electron microscopes that even major assembled product manufacturers in Kansai did not have at that time.
Some of the people who visited to observe the laboratory negatively remarked that it was "just like a university laboratory." Nevertheless, we steadily moved ahead with joint research and personnel exchanges based on relationships of trust with universities.
As a result, those working there who had graduated from university laboratories developed a high-frequency power capacitor. We also had great success with this technology in practical applications. For example, these capacitors were adopted in broadcasting equipment for public broadcasting.
This fusion of the laboratory's pursuit of knowledge and corporate commercialization fostered Murata's culture of innovation. This culture lives on to this day at Murata.
