Types of brainwaves and brainwaves that Brain NaviTM can measure

Brainwaves can be broadly classified into two types: spontaneous brainwaves, which constantly occur, and evoked brainwaves, which appear in response to stimuli. Murata Manufacturing's Brain NaviTM was developed with a focus on evoked brainwaves, and particularly ERPs that capture brain responses to stimuli.

Event-related potentials (ERPs) that can be measured by Brain NaviTM

When the brain recognizes stimuli such as sound or light, weak electrical signals are generated simultaneously on the surface of the head. ERPs are representations of the fluctuations in that potential.

Brain NaviTM leverages Murata Manufacturing's advanced sensing and analysis technologies to easily measure and visualize not only spontaneous brainwaves but also evoked brainwaves and ERPs, providing new possibilities for business.

Brain NaviTM visualizes the sensations and cognition that tend to be overlooked in brainwave (EEG) measurements.

What are ERPs?

Highly precise synchronization of stimuli and brain response timing

Conventional EEG measurements record the overall activity of the brain, and are thus not suited to measuring brain responses to specific stimuli. Brain NaviTM is capable of measuring ERPs, so the stimulus presentation and EEG measurement timings can be synchronized with high precision, enabling visualization of brainwave changes the instant that the brain responds to stimuli.

This technology makes it possible to obtain data on brain responses to human senses and cognition such as seeing and hearing. Currently, Brain NaviTM measurement methods have been established for visual and auditory stimuli, and technical development is also underway for touch, smell, and taste.

Accurate and objective data that does not rely on subjectivity

ERPs are indicators that represent how the brain perceives and processes stimuli, and are gaining attention as a more accurate and objective means of evaluation compared to conventional subjective responses. As long as the brain responds, changes in potential can be captured, even for information we do not notice or stimuli that we feel we do not remember. This enables use even for evaluation of latent cognition and impressions.
A wide range of applications are anticipated, such as evaluation of responses to products and advertising, improvement of user interfaces, and early detection of changes in cognitive functions due to fatigue and aging.

Simple and high-precision brainwave analysis made possible by Murata

A simple device with no need for a large-scale measurement environment

Brain NaviTM is an innovative brainwave analysis service that achieves simple and high-precision measurement and analysis of characteristics such as spontaneous brainwaves as well as ERPs that were previously challenging without specialized facilities.

There is no need for a sheilded room, the conventional measurement setting, large-scale measurement equipment, or challenging conductive gel. The measurement device is a single-electrode, headphone-type device that is comfortable enough for daily use, minimizing discomfort for users.

Murata's strengths lie in high precision and wireless technologies

Brain NaviTM combines a noise-reducing circuit design with an advanced noise rejection algorithm to accurately capture even weak brainwave signals. It also makes use of Murata Manufacturing's unique IP-based synchronization technology developed over many years to synchronize the time axes of the stimulus presentation and the brainwave data with millisecond accuracy, achieving a high-precision measurement environment. This provides ERP measurements with accuracy comparable to medical research levels, using a less expensive and more compact device.

Utilization of ERPs requires experimental designs based on specialized knowledge such as stimulus (event) design and data analysis. However, Murata will accompany you as a partner from introduction to implementation and analysis support. Brain NaviTM, which visualizes brain responses, will surely be a powerful ally in new product development and service enhancement.

Fields where Brain NaviTM is anticipated to be used

Business realized by the futuristic technology Brain NaviTM that accurately understands human sensations and cognition. In addition to the examples below, it is anticipated that Brain NaviTM can be utilized in a wide range of fields such as product development, evaluation of user experience, emotional analysis, education, and healthcare.

Personalization of hearing aids

Adjustment of hearing aids takes time, and there are cases where users discontinue use due to poor adjustments. Use of ERPs enables objective and individualized adjustments based on brain responses. This is expected to shorten adjustment times and improve satisfaction, which also leads to an enhanced quality of life for users.

Image of a person playing a game

Use in game and training app development

Scenes where players respond strongly and the timings at which they withdraw from the game can be visualized with ERPs, enabling development of highly immersive and stimulating games. By combining this with observation of learning motivation, concentration, and emotions, the development of more effective games and training apps tailored to individual users can also be expected.

Marketing research

Latent awareness of brand logos and commercials can be measured. For example, content with a high latent awareness effect even in brief advertisements flowing on social media can be extracted, enabling effective advertising strategy and product design. This is a field that demonstrates the advantages of ERPs, which can measure momentary brain responses that are a challenge for the general brainwave (EEG) measurements already widely used in marketing.

FAQ

Conventional electroencephalographs are large, cumbersome to wear, complex to operate, and have low usability. In contrast, Brain NaviTM can be incorporated even into simple electroencephalographs like headset types. We are aiming for the same level of accuracy as research electroencephalographs with Brain NaviTM.

The device can capture responses to stimuli that the individual is not aware of as changes in potential.

We expect to adjust the details of the service we provide for the handling of brainwave data, such as raw brainwave form data, noise-removed waveform data, and various brainwave feature values, according to the applications and system configuration of customers.

Specialized knowledge is needed to analyze raw brainwave data. However, we are considering providing this service in a form that is easy to utilize so that an even wider range of parties can utilize brainwave data.

This depends on the type and configuration of the external system or analysis tool of the other company. However, we expect to flexibly support the link-up of data according to the application and utilization method.

Inspired by advances in fMRI technology, we began research and development of Brain NaviTM from 2018 and have made continuous improvements since then. Brainwave analysis thus far has required multiple measurements, and our development team is working to balance both accuracy and practicality toward a future where meaningful measurement data can be obtained in a single observation.
We have achieved a lightweight and high-precision system that allows anyone to easily measure and analyze ERPs without the need for special equipment, environments, or staff. Brain NaviTM holds great potential as a new standard that enables easy visualization of brain responses. If you are interested and see potential in utilizing ERPs, please feel free to contact us. We eagerly await partners who will help us carve out a path to a new future.
